Blackwork tattoos , as the name suggests, belong to a style where the only color is black, and details are achieved through contrast. Depending on the design and the tattoo artist, the lines in each stroke vary from the finest to the darkest. Since they are done with black ink, these tattoos do not have shading. This blackwork tattoo movement is ancient . However, its popularity is relatively recent, a result of the evolution of tattooing. History of blackwork tattoos
Blackwork tattoos have a distant origin dating back many centuries, but today they have become a modern style. Their primary origin dates back to Polynesian tribes, with the application of these tattoos being a tradition thousands of years old. Ancient Polynesian tribes used these tattoos as a way to identify each individual. Through each tattoo, social position, lineage, religious beliefs, or war beliefs were defined.
From the 18th century onward , inspired by Polynesian traditions, this style was adopted by Western culture. This occurred after the British explorer James Cook traveled to Tahiti, where he observed the tattoos worn by the tribes. The impact was so profound that he introduced this practice to the European working class. As a result, this style became popular among European men, especially those working in coal mining and among sailors. As can be seen, the style remains quite popular today, and during the 19th and 20th centuries, it was particularly sought after by the working and lower classes.
